5 Landscaping Ideas For Your Swimming Pool This Spring

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to start thinking about how you can spruce up your outdoor living space.

Two areas that are often overlooked are the swimming pool and the hot tub. If you’d like to give some TLC to your pool or hot tub installation this year, read on for some great tips on how you can take your space from dull to dazzling.

1. Greenery

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to add life to any backyard is with some greenery. It adds a lushness around your pool or hot tub, turning the space into a spa-like setting. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can plant a shrub garden surrounding your spa or along the sides of your pool. If you’re looking for something easier, stone urns or large pots of greenery are also attractive. Some of the best plants for your pool or spa landscaping include palms, ornamental grasses, ferns, elephant ear plants, coleus and succulents. If you have a shady area, try planting a variety of hostas.

2. Lighting

Lighting can add a lot of character to your pool or hot tub. Particularly at night, lights can really add ambiance to your outdoor area. There are many different styles of lights you can use for your pool including fiber optics, floaters and wall lights. Different colored lights are particularly striking.

Most hot tubs have internal lights to illuminate the water, making additional lights for the inside unnecessary. Instead, you could opt to brighten your way to the spa with landscape lighting. These low-voltage lights are used to enhance your yard’s architectural elements and give off a warm glow.

3. Outdoor Furniture

Adding an outdoor seating area poolside or on the deck near your spa not only adds visual interest but is practical. Lounge chairs are a natural choice around the pool while outdoor chairs and couches can be used to create a conversation area on your deck or patio.

If you do a lot of barbecuing, an outdoor dining set is a natural choice. If you already have outdoor furniture that simply needs a facelift, give them a good cleaning and purchase new, colorful cushions and pillows for them. Sometimes a small upgrade is all you need to make something old look new again.

4. Waterfall

A waterfall is a spectacular way to add visual interest to your pool. There are a number of options available depending on your preferences and budget.

You’ll need to decide on how many levels you want the structure to be. Larger structures are best made with wood, but options for a smaller waterfall structure include faux stone, natural boulders or prefabricated designs.

Unless you’re pretty handy, you may want to leave this type of upgrade to the pros.

5. Pavilion Or Pergola

If you want to add a little bit of shade to your outdoor living area, a pergola or pavilion is the answer. Pergolas, a structure with a slated roof, look amazing constructed over a hot tub, especially when vines are used to act as an additional ceiling cover. Not only does it give you some added shade, but it allows you to use your spa even when it’s raining.

A pavilion, a structure that is open on the sides but with a solid roof, is perfect poolside. This gives you a shaded area for lounging. Pavilions are also great for putting over an outdoor kitchen and dining area or for other outdoor living areas.
