Everything You Need to Know About Hot Tub Yoga

When people talk about doing yoga, for many it calls to mind the images of uncomfortable stretches, peculiar poses, and the possibility of getting stuck in some unfamiliar position. The benefits of yoga, however, are undeniable, as it has been recognized for centuries as an alternative means of stabilizing body weight, reducing stress, and improving your overall physical health. For some, it can seem an unlikely activity that they would ever want to consider regardless of the good that can come from it. Hot Tub Yoga 101

Whether it is something you have been interested in for a long time or are still fairly skeptical about, it helps to know that with the aid of soothing hot water to help alleviate much of the discomfort associated with the various movements, yoga can become a low-impact workout that can improve your quality of life at nearly any age.

In addition to the deep breathing that is a necessary part of these exercises, the relaxation that comes naturally from being immersed in hot, therapeutic water can encourage longer attempts at the poses than what would be considered otherwise. It is known to help with arthritis and general inflammation while also providing an exemplary method of stress management. It is important to remember, however, that if you feel any excessive pain or discomfort, you should stop immediately. Only do what you truly feel comfortable doing.

Hot Tub Yoga for Beginners

The first step to water yoga is becoming one with the water. It does sound a little unusual, but knowing how you feel while in your hot tub is one of the best ways to practice mindful awareness. Adjust yourself according to how the water pressure feels against your body. Allow for plenty of room to move about and let your arms flow with the pulse of the water. This will help loosen up your body and promote tranquility so you will be more at ease and the stretches will feel more comfortable.

One effective movement that can help you is known as the Flowing Spinal Twist. When you are ready, remembering to breathe deeply, sit up straight and stretch both arms out in front of your chest. Pull them back in and wrap your arms around yourself snugly. Turn your head to look over your shoulder as you twist your body in both directions. Switch sides and continue to rotate.  This can be repeated several times and you may find it can feel quite good.

While staying aware of your breathing, you can then shift into another pose known as the Buoyant Staff. Remain sitting up with your back straight, lift your legs up and place them in front of you, propped up on the opposite side. Slowly elevate them towards your chest and hold for several seconds to deepen the stretch. If it is too much for you to handle in the beginning, it is okay to bend your knees and rest. This can easily transition into the Seated Staff Pose, where instead of bringing your legs to your chest, you lower yourself down to your thighs. It works very well in stretching the hamstrings.
